What is Heliotropic BreathWork? When the world’s preeminent consciousness researcher Stanislav Grof created his internationally renowned breathwork method and founded Grof Transpersonal Training he said his method was not the last word on breathwork and if people wanted to improve on it he encouraged others to do so. At University of Earth, we believe we have done just that with Heliotropic BreathWork. We are deeply indebted to Stan Grof for his profound genius. Heliotropic BreathWork adopts the core methods and precepts of Grof and adds crucial pieces that are proven to facilitate long term personal and planetary transformation, healing and wholeness.
Expanding Grof's concept of the "Inner Healer," Heliotropic BreathWork invokes the concept of the Higher Self, one's inner healer and teacher. Called by many names in the ancient wisdom traditions, the Higher Self, the Sun within, is the true healer and teacher. Using evocative music and breathing, the psyche (soul) enters a higher frequency and dimension of consciousness where true healing and transformation can take place.
Heliotropic BreathWork is a powerful approach to personal empowerment and self-exploration that relies on our innate inner wisdom. The reports of a vast variety of expanded states of consciousness and healings, including mental, emotional and physical ailments as well as past-life traumas, are truly astonishing. Along with being legal and safer for the psyche (soul) than psychedelics, some facilitators are now indicating that this type of breathwork helps to integrate previous altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelics in a way that psychedelics cannot. In Heliotropic BreathWork, participants leave with suggested practices to stay connected to their Higher Self for continued healing and wisdom.
Grof said the perfect place to do breathwork is to walk out of your session into a beautiful place in nature. University of Earth is located on a magical and healing land along the Wild & Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River. Cradled by sacred mountain peaks with the "Medicine River" flowing through it, this land has been dubbed the perfect place for breathwork by longtime facilitators of Grof's method.

University of Earth founder and director Rich Silver is the creator of Heliotropic BreathWork and serves as the lead facilitator. He is a practicing Ecotherapist with a MA in psychotherapy and has been certified in a number of healing modalities. Rich has completed all of the required training modules, including the certification module through Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT), the organization originally founded by Stan Grof, to become a certified Holotropic Breathwork Facilitator. While being grateful for the training, Rich has chosen not to certify due to personal concerns regarding GTT.
At his first training module, the late Tav Sparks, owner and director of GTT, said upon meeting Rich, "You have an amazing presence, you have clearly done a lot of work on yourself." In his third training module, Stacia Butterfield, Grof's hand-chosen workshop co-presenter, exclaimed, "You could be the poster child for Holotropic Breathwork."
