Psychedelics: The Promises, pitfalls & Perils
“These medicines will allow you to come and visit Christ, but you can only stay two hours. Then you have to leave again.
This is not the true Samadhi. It’s better to become Christ than to visit him.”
~ Neem Karoli Baba, Spiritual Teacher
Psychedelic means “soul-revealing.” Here, we will dive into what soul-revealing actually is. We will look at the early psychedelic research and its noble intention. We will examine the claims of proponents for the use of psychedelics and their efficacy. And report on the possible psychological benefits. We will explore the possible spiritual problems and perils. We will examine the science of what is going on in the brain, in particular the ego center, under the influence of psychedelics, that illicit “expanded states of consciousness,” and how those same states of consciousness can be achieved naturally, through breathwork, through time in nature, and other means. And why the natural way might be the wiser path in the long term. We will examine our medicine mesmerized, “pill popping,” “instant gratification” culture, and how the psychedelic industry adopted the “medical marijuana” strategy for legalization and commodification. We will see what the true spiritual teachers have to say about using psychedelics.
